Somewhere around four in the morning, his phone rang.  It's shrill tone drug him from a deep sleep, causing him to nearly jump from his bed.
He growled deeply, ran his fingers through his hair and grabbed the offending electronic from the bedside table.  He stared at the caller ID for a moment, his eyes adjusting to the bright light of the phone.
Elia.
Now why would she be calling at four in the morning?  She knew better to wake him unless it was a life or death situation, and usually even then, she refused to wake him.
Still, he thought he should call her back and make sure everything was all right.  It wouldn't do to just let it go, being as it would worry him to no end.  And, of course, Elia would wonder why he hadn't answered or why he hadn't called back.
Hitting redial, Sean lay back with the phone cradled between his shoulder and ear, and waited.  Five rings later, a sleepy voice answered.
"'Ello?"
"Elia?"
Silence for a long second followed.  The sleepy voice yawned.
"Sean?"
"Yes, it's me. Just calling you back."
A moment of hesitation.
"Calling me back?  What do you mean?"
"Well, you just called me. I didn't get it in time, since I happened to be asleep."
Another yawn.
"And what do you think I was doing when you called me back?"  She paused to yawn once more.  "Sean dear, I didn't call you."
Sean muttered softly.
"Are you sure?"
"Of course I'm sure!  Unless I can dial in my sleep, it wasn't me."
"Did you have your phone where you could've rolled over onto it on accident?"
"Not unless I happened to be sleeping on the table next to the bed."
Sean thought about this for several minutes.  If Elia wasn't the one who had called…but it was her number that came up on the caller ID…so if it wasn't her, who had it been?
"This is strange.  Where's Mako?"
Elia grunted and shifted her phone to her other ear.
"In his room, asleep I'm assuming."
He rubbed his eyes roughly.
"Check your last number dialed out.  And, the date and time it was made."  Sean instructed.
"Oh hold on then."  He heard her moving the phone around.  A minute or so went by before she came back on the line.
"Last call was to you, but it was at eleven-thirty pm on the seventeenth…that was last night."
Sean let out the breathe he had been holding.
"Okay, any incoming calls?"
"Give me a moment to check."  Again, he heard her moving the phone and before long, she was back.
"Only incoming call was from you at eight pm last night."
Rubbing his eyes more vigourously woke him completely.
"And text messages?"
She sighed heavily.
"Just the ones from you and Mako." She paused briefly. "Oh wait, that's not true, there were a couple from some number I don't know."
"What number? And why didn't you tell me about this before now?"
"You never asked."
"You didn't think I'd find it important to know that someone from an unknown number is texting you?"
Elia groaned.  Here it comes…
"Guess not, Sean dear.  I discussed it with Mako, and he said to just ignore it.  Probably some kid got the wrong number or something.  No big deal."
Sean fought the urge to scream at her.  Sometimes he wondered if she really understood all the dangers out in the world…if she really knew just what could happen to her…
Instead, he reigned in the urge to scream at her, and simply explained to her all the reasons that mistake could be a problem.
She chaffed at the lengthy sermon he was giving.
"I know Sean dear…"  She rolled her eyes as he rambled on. "Yes, Sean…no Sean…oh for crying out loud! I'm old enough to know this stuff!"
He continued as if she hadn't interrupted him.
"Now, if you get any other texts, or calls from that number you need to let me know right away, Elia."
"Yes, Sean."  She muttered tiredly under her breathe. "It's after four am and I'm being lectured."
"What was that?"  Sean sounded perturbed.
"Nothing, just yawning."
"Oh, well I guess that's all I need to tell you for now.  When I get home, you and I will be having a talk."
"Can't wait."  She grumbled.
"Stop being so childish, Elia.  I'm telling you this for your own good."
She sighed.
"Yes, I know Sean dear."
"Then why the attitude?"
Elia yawned into the phone.
"I don't have an attitude. I'm just tired, as I'm sure you must be?"
"I am, but I need to make sure you're alright before I can even remotely think about going back to sleep."  Sean insisted.
"Well, I'm perfectly fine, thank you.  Now Sean dear…"
"Yes, my love?"
"Go back to sleep.  I'll call you at a far more decent hour."
"As soon as you wake, Elia."
She laughed softly.
"Fine, soon as I wake up I'll call you.  But, all I'm saying is, if you are still asleep…"
"You know better than that. I'll be up before nine am no matter what time I go to bed."
Elia grinned.  Of course he would be…Sean could go to bed at three in the morning, and still be wide awake before nine.  How he did it, she didn't have a clue.
"Wish I could wake up all bright eyed and bushy tailed like you do."
"Haha, no I don't wake up like that."
"Have you forgotten I've seen how you wake up, Sean dear?  If what you are isn't bright eyed and busy tailed, I don't know what is!"
He laughed slowly.
"If you say so, little girl."
"I say so, Mr. Brennan."  She yawned loudly into the phone. "Now, do go back to sleep before the sun comes up."
Sean laughed again.
"You make it sound as if seeing the sun come up is a bad thing."
"It's not, but you can also be rather grouchy if you don't get enough sleep."
"As can you, my love."  He pointed out quickly.
"Yes, and you don't want that, do you Sean dear?"
"Why do you insist on calling me that all the time?"
She giggled.
"Because, as I've explained to you several times before, I call you that because you are very dear to me and as I'm sure you know, your name is Sean.  And, I happen to like how it sounds when I say it.  It just rolls off my tongue…"
"Among other things that roll off your tongue."  A thought he hadn't had in several days went through his mind.  Wow, I sound like such a mad pervert.
"Wow, way to be such a dirty minded old man!"  Elia laughed.
"Oh shut up. Go back to bed, my love…I'll talk to you in the morning…"
"It's already morning, Sean dear…"
"You know what I mean, little girl."
She giggled.
Sean?"
"Yes, Elia?"
"I don't mind when you're dirty minded. I quite like it."
Sean grinned slightly.
"I know, my love, I know."
A long drawn out sigh escaped her.
"Sean?"
"Yes?"
"You know what one of the servants asked me yesterday?"
"I can't imagine what that would be."
She sighed again.
"She asked me if I missed you when you're gone. I said that I do miss you.  Then, she asked me something really odd."
"Odd?  What did she ask you?"  Sean rolled over onto his side, closed his eyes and listened to her soft breathing.
"She asked me, what I would give just to have you back home."
"I see."
"Why would she ask me that?  Pretty odd thing to ask someone, don't you think?"
"Yes it is.  Which servant asked you that?"
"One of the maids.  I think she's new, she was here before you left though."
Sean murmured softly.
"Hm, when I get home I'll talk to her about it.  She shouldn't be asking you such weird questions…"
"Oh that's alright, Sean dear.  I mean, it did make me wonder just what I would give to have you home…"
"Oh?"
"Yes, I couldn't come up with anything, really…other than just silly things.  But still, just to have you back home, safe and sound…I'd give anything, you know."
It was his turn to sigh.
"I know, my love.  I'd give many things to be home right now.  Just to be with you…"
For a moment she didn't say anything.  Suddenly, she giggled.
"You dirty minded old man."
Sean laughed deeply.
"Yes, and you like it, little girl."
"Little girl? I'm almost thirty years old, Sean!"
"I know that, it's just a simple term of endearment. Just like you call me Sean dear, it's the same type of thing, doll."
Elia giggled more.
"Yes…" She giggled more.  "…Master."
Sean's eyes opened slowly and a slight, but wicked, smile tugged at his lips.
"About damn time you realized that, my love."
Another giggle greeted those words.
"Oh I've always known who and what you are…"  A soft intake of breathe. "Go to sleep, Sean dear."
"Fine. You do the same, Elia."
She laughed, and then yawned.
"Night, Sean."
She hung up before he could reply in kind.
"Goodnight, my love."  He whispered to the shadows in the room.
